The HFA the Human Fairy Alliance is having a summit to negotiate adoption between fairies and humans, thus ending the centuries long practice of fairies stealing human babies~! The Debate continues over the correct pronunciation of Betelgeuse: WIPEDIA'S PRONUNCIATION: Betelgeuse (/ˈbiːtəldʒuːz/, /ˈbɛtəldʒuːz/[1] or /ˈbiːtəldʒuːs/[2]), also known by its Bayer designation Alpha Orionis OTHER OPINIONS: Brian Cox annoyed me on Stargazing Live the other day by coming up with a completely new pronunciation for "Betelgeuse"; "Bettle-gus". With a hard g. Now I can understand him wanting to avoid saying "Beetle Juice" (actually I can't but I'll get to that in a moment) BUT.. while no one really knows what "Betelgeuse" actually means, the one thing everyone accepts is that the "-elgeuse" comes from "al-Jawza", which means "the central one", and thus the one thing you should never, ever do is pronounce the g hard. Aside from this mangling of basic Arabic, what annoyed me even more is this bizarre hatred British public educators have for the "Beetle Juice" pronunciation. Patrick Moore even insisted on spelling it "Betelgeux". OK so "beetle juice" sounds a bit childish but no more so than "Uranus", however one decides to pronounce that, so what's the problem? It fits in perfectly well with English usage: "Betel", a mild drug used in eastern Asia; is and always has been pronounced like "beetle" in English. "ge", pronounced soft, as all dictionaries agree. "use", is pronounced "yoose" or "yooze" in English, leaving with two possible options: "Beetle Jews", which sounds anti-Semitic or "Beetle Juice".
